Earth Hour

Today Malcolm Turnball announced that stricter energy standards would be introduced to save on greenhouse gas emissions. Although this sounds like a good idea, and it is, but it still doesn't address wastage of energy by corporations who leave their lights on in office towers around central business districts. It is is simply atrocious the amount of wastage that goes on and yet the Government is more concerned with targeting restrictions on consumer than on businesses. This shows the priorities of the government.

Instead, the Government should be encouraging and promoting Earth Hour. It is an initiative that demonstrates our capacity to save energy and help the environment by simply turning our lights off for 1 hour. This initiative is going to promote that everyone turn off their lights at 7.30pm on 31 March 2007. Visit the website for more information.

No, the government needs to do much more than just promote Earth Hour. They need to promote energy audits and encourage business to do things like put motion sensors in rooms so the lights go off automatically. Price Waterhouse Coopers have just done a massive energy audit of their Darling Harbour building and have put in a range of simple measures that will pay for themselves within 15 months, and will dramatically reduce the cost of running their building.

If building owners want to run their lights so their landmarks look pretty at night they should be putting bloody great solar panels along the tops so they can power those lights.

Working in a small business that already uses the energy saver lamps, I can see some of the savings that come from these globes. Our electricity bill dropped considerably. If it is put to families that they will be saving money on their bills, as well as helping the environment I don't think there will be too many objections.

I agree with Anonymous, in that there is still a long way to go, especially with businesses. Put in motion sensors within buildings and there would be a massive drop in electricity required.

Indeed anonymous, it should not be a voluntary system. perhaps a Lightbulb patrol could be introduced similar to our water patrols?

Nevertheless, earth hour should be given some air time, i am contributing.
